Tokyo-born sound artist, designer and electronic musician Yuri Suzuki explores sound worlds through designs that study the relationship between people and their surrounings as well as the shaping of personal experiences by music and sound. What’s striking about his methodology are the frequent collaborations – Yuri has worked with artists such as Jeff Mills and will.i.am, and he developed an augmented reality music kit as part of Google’s ‘Experiments’ program.

His work has been exhibited at high-profile places such as MoMA in New York City, Tate Britain in London, Mudam Luxembourg and the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo.

Music – always on.

“I’m listening to music all the time,” says Yuri, who refers to the medium as a “primal hobby and interest.” That’s why music is playing at pretty much any hour of the day, no matter the circumstances. The Dieter Rams principle of “Good design is thorough down to the last detail” resonates a lot with Yuri as it underlines the importance of showing both the “professionalism of a design and the responsibility of the designer.”

He credits humbleness as one of the most defining characteristics of a good designer, stating they also need to keep track of what’s happening in the world. A good knowledge base of trends and developments can help produce more reactive results and fine-tune every detail.
